What motivates us to be the best? Research

I came across this video based on a discussion of the RSA on behavioral science, while I was looking for material for a presentation on Marketing Intelligence.

Indeed I was struck by several things. One for the very simple, dynamic, understandable and above all tacky presentation. Another by notions about the effects of different types of incentives in the performance of people.

Some things can get clear of this paper:

* The men, especially men, high-performance focus, is not as manageable and predictable as it seems.
* Money can be and is indeed a great motivator when mechanical work, simple and low cognitive demand involved. But once you pay "enough" money ceases to be an effective motivator when cognitive performance, creative talent involved.
* Three things are most effective incentives at this level: Self, Improvement and Purpose. The greatest talent is now on companies that offer to help out, in short, "the opportunity to make the world a little better!

I love this conversation because if you think about very well (well, not so much), it is the very basis and purpose behind what is now the web 2.0 and the very essence and success of social media as we know it. Yes, those concepts which ultimately gurus abound. I leave it, enjoy it.
