Grappling with Ubuntu 10.04 and Fedora 12 A priori grief is patchy, with Ubuntu 10.04 is in beta and Fedora 12 does not (in
Fedora's official website you can download a alpha version 13) but neither
Lucid Lynx (name "recognition" of Ubuntu 10.04) is so in diapers or
Constantine (the Fedora 12) is so complete.
I warn you that the content of this article has no fun and simplistic tone of the series
"Paso de Linux, it is very complicated," , since the tasks carried out can put a little fear in the body of the people less familiar with this scene. Indeed, the current distributions of Linux are the most user friendly, yet there is always a first time for certain tasks, and since I finished my final year project (a customization of a system for
Debian industrial PC with hard
8 MB flash and a backup system
over TCP / IP integrated Acerinox currently running) I'm a little rusty and the Linux scene progresses at a breakneck speed. But with perseverance and the help of the community, always willing to help, it is a most rewarding experience. To my experiences
I used two computers: one is my laptop battle, a Vaio VGN-FE41M (T5500 with 2 GB of RAM and GeForce Go 7400), with a Windows 7 pre-existing system and using NTFS data partition to save data Linux. The other is a P4 2.4 GHz with 512 MB of RAM and an ATi Radeon 7000. The tests I have installed Linux partitions directly
ext4 without using virtual machines
or
Live Distros.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH LYNX LUCID Oops, sorry. I left the label SPOILER.
Much has been discussed in forums of this version, but in most cases the subject of discussion was the much-worn
Plymouth, which promises a lively start
"improves the user experience," (poor model behavior we caught copying Microsoft to speech). The implementation of Plymouth (which I will later) clashes with the objective to later versions of Ubuntu to 9.10 /
Karmic to reduce the boot within 10 seconds , so to see how you eat it. As a Linux user from the old school (early versions of
RedHat or Slackware
), the boot screen services and daemons
I find most useful for diagnosing problems, but I understand that the current trend is still improving the interface and hiding the guts and innards of our beloved
kernel and his friends partying. Plymouth
not go. No idea why. I have found no documentation to make it work or I can find a solution to my (limited) knowledge. But do not think it relevant.
For now, my first disagreement is just the start in graphical mode. If you need to download windows memory manager, you encounter a terminal inaccessible because it is loaded into a graphical and no text, and paste the detection modes Bacalar in this step. This is solved by editing the boot lines in GRUB
, adding the directive
vga = normal, persistent or through configuration files.
Here comes the second hurdle: the old GRUB has given way to a new version
much more powerful (allows
shell scripting and load modules), but much more complex
to handle. After hatching some manuals, I get to change the settings to boot Windows 7 at the start and extended VGA mode off so many gives me problems with the text terminal. As in our missed
LILO (in how we long
"Family Doctor" , like, "yeah, I was funny, but better than no return"), following modification of the configuration parameters needed apply the changes with a command from the console shell
.
many applications have given me errors the first few times that I ran (in either machine). I sent the error reports for and after two days of testing proposed updates in the Update Manager served. Has gained stability and performance. I recommend at this point installing the package ubuntu-tweak
, which will allow us to customize the system to the absolute limits, among other items, return
right buttons control the window in Lucid Lynx default are the left, forcing the user to change all known conventions and resulting far, especially at first, a little tired).
addition, we, or rather, we should, for the benefit of the operation, install some packages like proprietary drivers, the runtime
Adobe and restricted set of plugins for Ubuntu (with
codecs, plugins
and other herbs).
What has been my genuine
sorpresón is the driver for the network card my desktop computer, a D-Link Air PCI. A card horror that Windows has many problems to capture the signal from an access point with WPA less than 7 m away and stay connected, and that only
Guadalinex EDU (send noses!) Managed to take to walk, even with
Karmic reaction. But Lucid Lynx
instant connection you just set up the desktop, and also maintains a high transfer rate at all times. I guess this is useless to almost anyone, but personally I love and I solved :-)
ballot package that comes with the CD software is basic, the Gnome desktop and the usual gang: OpenOffice.org
,
Rhythmbox, Brasero
, Firefox and little else. However, still more complete than the one included with Windows, and a slightly lower price
;-) management tools and customization offer a wide range of possibilities. The Software Centre, will complete the Ubuntu desktop in a simple and effective, and that directly blocks mark applications and the system automatically resolves dependenciaqs. I recommend
include some extra repositories to which comes standard.
As for the interface, Gnome is complemented by a collection of songs
precious (except the paste that I told you about the controls on the left, we can solve with Tweak), which can add these: http
: / / art.gnome.org / themes . If activated the restricted controls for graphics cards at our disposal a gallery of effects that will delight lovers farfolleo
.
To make the NTFS data partition of the laptop is mounted on system startup with read and write I have used a configuration tool
called ntfs-3g . Then I deleted the folders
Documents, Music
,
Pictures, and
Videos Downloads personal folder, and I changed it to five links, with the same names, folders on NTFS partition found the items to which referred, as a single partition I have documents that will be accessible from both Linux and Windows.
My conclusions:
- is still too green version 10.04, while installing package updates that are released with high frequency. I strongly recommend you to stay with 9.10 and wait for the complete distribution upgrade when available. Unless you like to send error reports as you type :-)
- requires a powerful machine. It is not an operating system to take equipment over 5 years. The laptop is eaten with chips even configured as farfolleo
, but the old desktop at home, we have hard time passing as you need to do more than two things at once. If your machine is a bit older, you should read my experience with Fedora 12.
- bringing the number of restricted drivers can be considered an affront to the spirit of
software free, but if you are someone who uses the computer for work and three whistles you care philosophy is something that should be taken into account. It is good that the user has the opportunity to choose.
EXPERIENCING CONSTANTINE
a cheap excuse to release the label "prescriptions." Try it!
As I said before, years ago I worked with the latest versions of RedHat and Fedora I lived through the transition. By then I was more interested in
SuSe and Debian. Then came Ubuntu, and I forgot a bit of everything.
So reformat my Ubuntu partition para instalar
After fix, the computer works great.
Also in the desktop system fails me updates. After several hours selecting individual packages and hundreds of bugs (without exaggeration, have been more than 99 and less than 1000), I abandoned
update.
The laptop has gone all significantly better. I installed the CD version from a
pendrive 1 GB Live mode in five minutes! Detected all the hardware without problems, but is yet to grace me
nouveau driver for NVIDIA .
As for work with the desktop, this is a little less friendly than Ubuntu. Among other shortcomings, pointed out that of the
little customization and administration tools this distribution offers. While installing alternative desktops is more comfortable than in Ubuntu.
system software installation is, in my view, considerably worse than Ubuntu. In Fedora install individual packages with a dependency resolver (in the style of the old school), which requires a greater knowledge of the packages that are an exercise of intuition and extra for the user to manage time. I do not like the RPM system, sorry.
My conclusions:
- extremely fast this system stable powerful, even on older computers. To me, your best bet.
- not too fitted as standard and a bit difficult to update.
- if you need a machine with more specific uses of a computer desk job, this distribution may be more appropriate.
And most importantly: Plymouth works! RESULT
Like it? You sell it! (And now you have to say "why do I want vendao?)
the end I removed my laptop's Ubuntu 10.04 and I left the 9.10 for reliability. Also, the NVIDIA drivers did not work well
Lucid Lynx. Wait for the full distribution upgrade. Meanwhile, I have provided bug reports to all God is a way to collaborate with communities of developers.
The desktop, however, I left Fedora 12. After solving the problem of wireless card and Internet connection, the machine performance is just remarkable, I love it. Ubuntu was fatal.
EDIT: I've finally given up Fedora on desktops. He returned to Guadalinex EDU, in addition to work reasonably well brings the software I need in my work, but without updating to version 9.10 of Ubuntu, because then returns to wireless indefinite strike.
takes a week 95% to 5% use of Linux vs. Windows, and honestly, I do not miss anything less.
Finally, anticipating that one of my next posts will be a simple tutorial teaching to create a Linux distribution on a pendrive
